Last week I went to see the five-storied pagoda at Horyuji Temple.

Ever since my days in China I had been interested in old Japanese buildings, and from the moment I learned about the extraordinary structure of Japan's five-storied pagodas, I had wanted to visit Horyuji someday and see one for myself. Horyuji is famous as the world's oldest wooden architecture, built in the seventh century. In 1993 it became the first site in Japan to be registered as a World Cultural Heritage site. The five-storied pagoda stands just to the left as you pass through the Middle Gate of the West Precinct, and it too is the oldest wooden pagoda in the world. It is 32.55 meters tall. Long ago, it is said, it was designed to be this tall so that common people who could not enter the temple grounds could still worship it from a distance. For its time it must have been rather like a modern skyscraper.

In fact, in Japan, a country with frequent earthquakes, history records almost no case of a five-storied or three-storied pagoda collapsing. When I looked into it, I found that Japanese five-storied pagodas have a special structure. The secret of why they do not fall over apparently has something to do with this.

その ひみつ は こう だ

The secret is as follows.

がいかん から みる と ごじゅうのとう は いっけん ごかい だて に みえる しかし じっさい は いつつ の たてもの を した から ひとつ ずつ かさね あげ た こうぞう に なって いる ちょうど おわん を ひっくりかえし て いつつ つみかさね た よう な イメージ だ たてもの に は ふつう の けんちく に ある はしら は み られ ず ただ いっぽん の しんばしら が うえ から した まで かよって いる だけ だ わたし は はじめ とうぜん これ が たてもの ぜんたい を ささえ て いる と おもって い た だが そう で は なかった なんとも しんじ がたい はなし だが しんばしら は いつつ の そう どれ と も けつごう し て おら ず しんばしら と かくそう の こうぞう の くみたて ぶぶん に は すきま さえ あい て いる という の だ

Seen from the outside, a five-storied pagoda looks at first glance like a five-story building. In reality, though, it is built by stacking five separate structures one on top of another from the bottom up. Picture turning bowls upside down and piling five of them together. The building has none of the pillars found in ordinary architecture; there is only a single central pillar running from top to bottom. At first I naturally assumed that this pillar supported the entire building. But that was not the case. Hard as it is to believe, the central pillar is not joined to any of the five layers, and there is even a gap where the pillar meets the assembled framework of each layer.

So how is a five-storied pagoda put together? In fact, the pillars, beams and shaft members use almost no nails; convex tenons are inserted into concave sockets. What is more, just as with the central pillar, a slight gap is left at every joint.

ごじゅうのとう ぜんたい に は この よう な せつごう ぶぶん が いち ぜろぜろぜろ かしょ ほど あり じしん の さい この すきま と き が もつ どくとく の しなり が じしん の エネルギー を けいげんする やくわり を はたし て いる また それ だけ で なく いつつ の そう が かさなって いる こと で じしん の エネルギー が した から うえ へ つたわり にくく ゆれる よう な しくみ に なって いる もっとも おおきな じしん が おきれ ば バランス を くずし て とう ぜんたい が とうかい する お それ が ある しかし しんぱい は むよう だ おおきな ゆれ で とびだし そう に なる かくそう が しんばしら に あたる こと によって おしもどさ れ とう が いっぽう に たおれ ない よう に なって いる の だ

There are about 1,000 such joints in the pagoda as a whole, and during an earthquake these gaps, together with the distinctive springiness of wood, serve to reduce the earthquake's energy. Beyond that, because the five layers are merely stacked, seismic energy does not travel easily from bottom to top, so the building is made to sway slowly. Of course, if a major earthquake struck, the pagoda might lose its balance and the whole structure could collapse. But there is no need to worry. When a violent tremor makes a layer start to slide out, it strikes the central pillar and is pushed back, so the pagoda does not topple to one side.

Many mysteries about the five-storied pagoda of Horyuji still remain unsolved. But seeing the pagoda up close this time made me appreciate anew how magnificent and profound Japanese architecture is. Through this blog I want to convey the wonder of traditional culture and traditional techniques to as many people as possible, because traditional techniques have meaning only when they are handed down to later generations. It may be a small effort, but in this way I hope the wisdom and skills of our predecessors will be passed on.

Good evening, He Weiming! I read The Secret of the Five-Storied Pagoda. I was amazed that such a rational building existed more than 1,300 years ago. I want to go and see it for myself someday too.

The secret of why five-storied pagodas do not fall over apparently has something to do with this.

Hard as it is to believe, the central pillar is not joined to any of the five layers, and...

The fountain pen I had used for many years broke, but I am so attached to it that I find it hard to throw away.

That global warming is advancing is a fact hard to deny.

しんさい の のち の じょうきょう は ひつぜつ に つくし がたい

The conditions after the earthquake disaster are beyond description.
