Text:
The world's population keeps on growing, but Japan's population has begun to decline. According to statistics for 2005, the world's population stood at about 6.5 billion, some 75.5 million more than the year before. Japan's population, by contrast, stood at about 127.75 million, some 10,000 fewer than the year before.
2
One cause of this lies in the falling number of children being born. This phenomenon is known as the declining birthrate, and the trend is expected to continue in the years ahead.
3
Behind the declining birthrate lies a change in people's attitudes toward marriage, childbirth and child-rearing. For example, the trend toward marrying later in life is growing stronger year by year. The average age of women at marriage was 25.0 in 1977, but it rose to 26.0 in 1992 and to 27.8 in 2004. As women grow older they are more inclined to put off having children, and the birthrate, which shows how many children one woman bears, falls. That is what leads to the declining birthrate.
4
In addition, because of rising prices, heavy taxes and housing problems, more and more couples marry but have no children. The number of people who choose not to marry is also growing, and the rate of people remaining unmarried is rising as well.
5
The number of births in 2003 had fallen to about half the figure for 1973. The government too is taking measures to keep the birthrate from dropping further. But people's attitudes are not going to change easily, and it will surely take many long years before results appear.
