Kentaro: Nothing, really. Our children are in touch with two cultures at once, aren't they. For now they're simply soaking up knowledge and experience, but I was thinking that someday they may well stumble somewhere between Japanese and Chinese culture, or in moving between the two...

Xiuli: True. First of all, never forget to be considerate of others. And then, as the saying goes, "Learning without thought is labor lost; thought without learning is perilous." If they take those words as their model, I think they'll naturally come to see things with a broader view.

Mastering a foreign language is one of the important tools for international exchange, and once you are well versed in a foreign language, the culture of another country becomes easier to understand. Language is certainly necessary for international exchange, but is that really enough on its own?

Imamichi Tomonobu, known as a philosopher, wrote a short piece entitled "Warm Soup." It recounts his own experience during a stay in Paris, and at a time when international exchange is so loudly called for, it is a precious episode for rethinking what internationalism really means.

The Second World War ended with Japan's surrender in the summer of 1945. Around that time Japan was the outcast of the world. It may be hard to believe, but for some years after the war Japan was not even allowed to take part in the Olympic Games, that peaceful sporting festival of young people from all over the world. Rather than lamenting the harshness of such international judgment, we must humbly reflect on the self-righteous nationalism and statism of the Japan of those days, which brought that severe criticism upon us. Because of those circumstances, Japan was not permitted to join the world's economic bodies either, and there was a time when both the country and its people were wretched. What follows is an experience from that period, a story that makes one think about what internationalism means, and so I would like to set it down here.

This is a story from that time. Ordinarily I ate a set meal at the self-service cafeteria inside the university, but on Saturdays, when I had decided to go and do research at the national library in the opposite direction from the university, I had no choice but to eat dinner at a small restaurant near my lodgings. The place was not luxurious, but it had a Parisian air about it, a small, homemade sort of eatery with barely ten seats. A white-haired mother cooked in the kitchen while her daughter, who looked like a thoroughbred Parisian beauty, handled the waiting and the register, and the two of them ran it by themselves. Since I had dinner there every Saturday, within two months we had come to know each other by sight.

A young part-time lecturer's monthly pay is low, so by the end of the month I, a foreigner, would find myself short of money. On the last Saturday night of the month, therefore, I would order neither soup nor salad nor any meat dish; after adding some needless remark such as "I have no appetite today," I would make do with ordering only the cheapest item, an omelet. It was the custom for one portion of bread to come with it. After I had placed such an order several times, they must have realized that this young foreign-born scholar was having a hard time at the end of each month.

One evening, when I again said "just an omelet," the daughter quietly brought me two portions of bread. Since bread was cheap I ate both, but when the bill came I was charged for only one portion, so I spoke up and said, "That was two portions of bread." She gently put her index finger to her lips, shook her head with a smile in her eyes, and, so that the other customers would not notice, took payment for only one. Something warm stirred in my heart; I said "Thank you" in a husky voice and left the shop. From then on, on those end-of-the-month omelet nights, there were always two portions of bread at half price.

Some months later, in the cold season of February, another impoverished evening came around. People speak of Paris as the city of flowers, but it lies at 50 degrees north latitude, so it is a rather cold capital where the heating goes on from the middle of September. In winter the cold seeps up from the ground. That night it hailed. As usual I forced a cheerful face, ordered only an omelet, and started reading a book while I waited. There were two parties of customers in the shop, each eating a large, warm-looking meat dish. It was then that the slightly stooped mother came over to my table carrying a bowl of steaming soup. Holding it out with trembling hands, she said in a low voice, "We mixed up a customer's order and this one is left over. Would you care to have it?" and looked at me with gentle eyes. It was a small restaurant; I knew perfectly well that no customer's order had just been mixed up.

And so a hearty onion gratin soup was set down before me. To me, cold and hungry as I was, how welcome it was. So that they would not notice my tears falling into the soup, I savored it spoonful by spoonful, as though chewing each one. I have had painful experiences in France too, but because of these people's unassuming kindness, I do not think I will ever come to dislike France. No, more than that: I do not think I will ever despair of humanity.

Internationalism, internationalism, people talk about it endlessly, but its foundation is not fluency in foreign languages, nor dazzling brilliance in the arts and scholarship, nor the sheer scale of one's enterprise. It is the kindness of putting yourself in the other person's place, the awareness that we are all fellow members of the human race. The perfect example of it is the selfless love those people showed me, a nameless foreigner merely passing through, haltingly and with a touch of embarrassment. Love of humanity as love of one's neighbor, asking nothing in return: this is the keynote of internationalism. And if that is so, then it is being put to the test within the ordinary daily life of each one of us.
