Text:

The Silk Road and the Japanese
2
For Chinese people it may be common knowledge that the eastern end of the Silk Road is Luoyang, but there are Japanese who feel that it stretched even farther east, all the way to Nara. Every time one sees the many treasures preserved in the Shosoin, one feels keenly that the eastern end of the Silk Road is indeed Nara.

The Shosoin stands to the northwest of the Great Buddha Hall of Todaiji Temple, known for the Great Buddha of Nara. It is the place where articles associated with Emperor Shomu, a devout Buddhist who had the Great Buddha of Todaiji built, and with his empress are preserved. They number more than nine thousand items, and many of them are said to be works of art and craft that the envoys to the Tang court brought back from China.

For example, among the treasures there is a glass vessel called the Hakururi no Wan, a white glass bowl. Many identical pieces have been found in the ruins of Sasanian Persia, present-day Iran. Investigation revealed that this bowl was loaded onto camels in Persia more than twelve hundred years ago, carried along the Silk Road to China, and then came to Japan aboard the ships of the envoys to the Tang court. There is also a treasure called the Raden Shitan Gogen Biwa, a five-stringed lute of red sandalwood inlaid with mother-of-pearl. It is the only five-stringed lute surviving anywhere in the world, worked with highly advanced craftsmanship, and on its surface is depicted a wandering minstrel riding a camel. It is a treasure that seems to tell the very story of having been carried to Japan along the Silk Road. Other objects too, such as glass bottles, cups and similar vessels, and ornaments of glass beads, have been shown to be goods made in the Western Regions that reached Japan by way of the Silk Road. On the other hand, records also survive of Persians who came to Japan around the eighth century accompanying the envoys to the Tang court. Given all this, it is a fact that Japan was linked to the east-west traffic routes of the Tang era, so when Japanese say that the eastern end of the Silk Road is Nara, perhaps that cannot be dismissed as entirely without reason.

Since time immemorial the Silk Road has linked East Asia with West Asia, Asia with Europe, and both with North Africa. As its other name, the Road of Silk, suggests, silk native to China was carried to West Asia and Europe, while a great variety of goods, culture and technology traveled back and forth along it. As a result, in the regions that lie along the Silk Road routes, the cultures of East and West merged and developed changes all their own.

The routes linking the three great landmasses of Asia, Europe and North Africa are vast and complex. For example, the ancient Silk Road known as the Oasis Route, which starts from present-day Luoyang and reaches Rome, enters the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region and there divides into a route running along the north side of the Tianshan Mountains, one along the south side, and one along the southern rim of the Tarim Basin. Besides these there was the Steppe Route, which crossed the grasslands of northern Eurasia, and the South Sea Route, which put out to sea from Guangzhou and reached the Indian Ocean and the Arabian Peninsula. There was also a route running east from Luoyang to Mingzhou, present-day Ningbo, and from that Mingzhou there existed a sea route connecting to Nara in Japan.

It was after the television program NHK Special: The Silk Road was broadcast in 1980, two years after the Japan-China Treaty of Peace and Friendship was signed on August 12, 1978, that Japanese people came to take a strong interest in the Silk Road. Many of them formed a powerfully exotic image of the very words the Silk Road. The theme music that Kitaro composed for the program may also have had something to do with it. In fact, we should not forget that even before that there were Japanese who had been captivated by the Silk Road and expressed those feelings in their own way: Dan Ikuma composed the orchestral suite The Silk Road, and Hirayama Ikuo traveled the Silk Road and painted works on the theme of the transmission of Buddhist culture.

Every autumn an exhibition of the Shosoin treasures is held at the Nara National Museum. The first one dates back to 1946, and ever since then about seventy items are chosen each year from the treasures preserved in the Shosoin and shown to the public. Visitors during the run of roughly twenty days exceed one hundred thousand every time, and in 2009 the figure came close to three hundred thousand. There are even devoted fans who make an overnight trip every year to see the exhibition. And every one of them cries out in admiration at the sight of these richly cosmopolitan craft works, brought here long ago from Tang China and also from India, Persia and as far away as Greece and Rome, and is made to feel keenly the connection between the Silk Road and Japan.

The number of Japanese travelers visiting the Silk Road is also growing. Xi'an and Dunhuang go without saying, but many people also visit Urumqi, once called an oasis of the Silk Road and now transformed into one of China's leading industrial and commercial centers; Turfan, which flourished from ancient times as an important base on the Silk Road and served as a setting for Journey to the West; and Loulan, which slept beneath the sands for more than a thousand years.
10
Such travelers all say the same thing: Japan was already connected to the world more than twelve hundred years ago. And when you think that what connected Japan to the world was the Silk Road, doesn't it fill you with a sense of grand romance?
