In August 2003, when the Japanese prime minister of the day visited the Czech Republic, a somewhat unusual "goodwill ambassador" traveled with him: ASIMO, the two-legged walking robot developed by a Japanese automaker. At the banquet with the Czech prime minister, ASIMO delivered a toast in Czech and drew loud applause.

Robots that appear in movies and animation usually have shapes and movements resembling those of humans, so when we hear the word robot we tend to picture something like that. In reality, however, contrary to expectation many robots look nothing at all like a human being. In automobile factories, for example, most of the work is done by industrial robots, and these are usually machines that can be controlled automatically and resemble a human arm. There is also a disaster-rescue robot called IRS Soryu, under study at a Japanese research institute, which crawls into buildings that have collapsed in an earthquake or the like and searches for survivors; it has a long, thin body like a snake. For work of this kind, there is no need for a robot to be shaped like a human at all.
3
Quite apart from those, however, research into making robots do the same kinds of work as humans, as ASIMO does, is also being pursued eagerly. In Japan especially, perhaps because manga and animation such as Astro Boy and Doraemon have created a strong attachment to human-shaped robots, there is a strong tendency to think of robots as friends rather than as enemies or slaves of humanity. Such robots are expected to play an active role in fields like elderly care. In Japan, the country with the longest life expectancy in the world, caring for the elderly is a major problem. Nursing-care robots that keep their owner company in conversation, tell them when it is time to take their medicine, and contact a hospital if something seems wrong with them should be a great help as Japan enters an era of falling birth rates.
4
During its visit to the Czech Republic, ASIMO laid a bouquet of chrysanthemums before Karel Capek, the Czech writer who gave birth to the word robot. The robots in Capek's play R.U.R. rose in revolt and destroyed humankind; one wonders how Capek would view the situation today, in which robots are trying to become friends of human beings.
