Akutagawa Ryunosuke's "The Spider's Thread" is a famous story that almost every Japanese person knows. In it, Kandata, a sinner suffering in hell, climbs up a single spider's thread lowered from paradise far above, but because he gives in to greed the thread snaps and he falls back into hell. Here the spider's thread is used as a symbol of something thin and easily broken.

A spider's thread, however, is by no means weak. Far from it: it is much tougher than we ordinarily imagine. Of course, a single thread is not enough to hold up a human being, but there is an actual case in which spider silk succeeded in supporting a person's body. One researcher bundled together about 190,000 threads from golden orb-weaver spiders to make a rope roughly 10 cm long and 2.6 mm thick, and used it to form a loop about 8 cm in diameter. He then hung a hammock from a tree with this loop and got in himself. The hammock did not fall, and even when he swung it back and forth like a swing, the thread reportedly stretched only slightly. And no wonder: in fact, compared at the same thickness, spider silk is several times stronger than iron, with elasticity equal to that of nylon or even greater.

These outstanding properties of spider silk have been well known since ancient times, and all sorts of attempts to make use of it have been made around the world. Yet not one of them has succeeded. The reason lies in the difficulty of producing spider silk in large quantities. Securing food for carnivorous spiders is no small task, and spiders, which have a strong sense of territory, will sometimes eat one another.

If producing silk in quantity by using spiders is difficult, then one need only create an artificial thread with the same structure as spider silk. In fact, universities and companies around the world are researching ways to make "spider silk" artificially. This too is far from simple, of course, but it is gradually moving closer to practical use. If research of this kind succeeds, humanity will obtain a dream fiber: stronger than iron and, unlike nylon, easily broken down, so that its impact on the environment is small as well.
