Once again this year, the season has come when people fret over the cherry blossom forecast. The forecast of when the cherry trees will bloom is announced every March. The Meteorological Agency has upgraded its supercomputer and is taking on the task fully prepared.

The Meteorological Agency has been using computers to forecast the cherry blossoms since 1996. It builds a prediction formula from past blooming dates and temperature data, then feeds into that formula the temperatures from summer up to the announcement date together with the forecast temperatures after it, and derives the expected blooming date. Until now it based this on blooming records from the past fifty years, but this year, taking global warming and urbanization into account, it reportedly selected data from the past thirty years, which is closer to current conditions.

This year the blossoms are expected to be late because of a cold wave. Last year they opened more than four days later than forecast, and complaints came one after another. How will it turn out this year?

Surely there is no Japanese who is indifferent to the cherry blossoms. Reports fly back and forth: the blossoms have been declared open, the trees are two-tenths in bloom. Once they open, people worry about rain and about wind, and even when they tell themselves not to fuss, they cannot help caring. When the cherries bloom, the flower viewing begins. People enjoy the blossoms with colleagues, friends and family while drinking sake and eating boxed lunches. It is not only the flowers: the cherry tree is closely woven into Japanese life. Salted blossoms become the cherry tea served on celebratory occasions, and they sit on top of sweet bean buns. Salted leaves are used to wrap cherry rice cakes. The wood is used for everything from woodworking material to building timber. The bark is used for tea canisters and craft goods.

In Beijing, China, you can also see cherry trees donated from Japan at Tiantan Park and Yuyuantan Park. Incidentally, the cherry trees in Beijing are said to bloom about three weeks later than those in Tokyo.
