Sato: How beautiful. The tile-roofed houses are reflected in the water, and it feels just like looking at a huge painting. What are those little boats called?

Guide: Yes. Brewing in Shaoxing is said to have begun 2,500 years ago, in the Spring and Autumn and Warring States period. Shaoxing wine has been made by almost the same methods ever since.

When it comes to water towns, the ancient towns of Jiangnan are the finest of all. Jiangnan means the south bank of the lower Yangtze, and an ancient town means an old town. The name refers to places such as Wuzhen, Zhouzhuang, Xitang, Tongli and Zhujiajiao, which developed greatly from the Ming through the Qing dynasty as cities on the water that had no city walls. The scenery of the ancient towns stretching along the canals has a charm of its own throughout the year, but the early spring scenery is especially wonderful. There one can see views and a simple way of life found only in a water town.

The lanes of the ancient towns are generally narrow and long. Slender stone-paved paths run on and on between the old buildings. The lanes of Wuzhen in particular are a must-see. The traditional operas of these towns, such as Kunqu and Yueju, are also very popular. A canal tour of Zhouzhuang is something one should certainly experience. Listening to the boatman sing, you pass fourteen bridges built in the Yuan, Ming and Qing dynasties. Sixty percent of the houses in this town were built in the Ming and Qing dynasties, and the carvings on the pillars and gates of the Shen Residence, built in the Qing dynasty, are especially fine masterpieces. In Xitang, you will be wide-eyed at the long walkway that runs for as much as a kilometer along the canal, roofed with eaves to keep off the sun, rain and wind.

Tongli has many old bridges and buildings from the Ming and Qing dynasties. Its highlight is Tuisi Garden, the mansion of a wealthy family that is registered as a World Heritage site. Built at the end of the Qing dynasty, this grove-like garden is a representative example of the gardens of Jiangnan, and one never tires of its beauty.

In Zhujiajiao, the shopping street of Beidajie is a delight. It is a narrow shopping street where the atmosphere of the Ming and Qing dynasties remains strong, and because the sky appears like a thin line between the roofs on either side, it is also called One-Line Street. Fangsheng Bridge, which spans the water in the northeast of the town, has become the symbol of Zhujiajiao.

Tours to the ancient towns of Jiangnan set out from Shanghai, Hangzhou or Suzhou. Wuzhen, Zhouzhuang, Xitang and Zhujiajiao are most easily reached from Shanghai, and Tongli from Suzhou.
