The crested ibis is a bird facing the threat of extinction worldwide. It was originally distributed widely across East Asia: eastern Russia, northeastern to central China, the Korean Peninsula and Japan. Overhunting and the deterioration of the environment, however, reduced its numbers everywhere, and today it is listed as an endangered species, an animal at risk of dying out.

Today China is the only country in the world where wild crested ibises still live, and their habitat is in Yang County, south of Xi'an in Shaanxi Province. For a time the bird was believed to have died out in China as well, but in 1981 seven of them were discovered. Since then, through the monitoring and protection of nesting sites and through artificial breeding, the confirmed population has grown to more than 1,000. At the Shaanxi Crested Ibis Rescue and Breeding Center in Yang County the birds are raised in an environment much like the wild, and the center also carries out public awareness work, such as campaigns aimed at elementary school children using pamphlets and videos.

It is not widely known that Japan supports these Chinese efforts to protect the crested ibis. Japan raises money for the Fund to Support Crested Ibis Conservation in China and sends the Crested Ibis Conservation Observation Mission to China, whose members observe wild ibises and visit conservation facilities and local elementary schools, deepening the exchange between the two countries.

In Japan, meanwhile, the number of crested ibises fell sharply from the Meiji era onward. In 1981 the last five birds still living in the wild were taken into the Sado Crested Ibis Conservation Center on Sado Island in Niigata Prefecture, where artificial breeding was attempted. Despite these all-out efforts, however, the breeding ended in failure, and in 2003 the Japanese crested ibis became extinct.

It was China that extended a helping hand to Japan in that situation. In 1998, on the occasion of his visit to Japan, President Jiang Zemin of China promised to present two crested ibises. The following year, in 1999, the male Youyou and the female Yangyang arrived in Japan and were placed in the care of the Sado Crested Ibis Conservation Center. Artificial breeding based on these two birds has been carried out ever since, and as of 2007 as many as 107 birds were being raised. One breeding success has followed another, and plans to return the birds to the wild are moving forward. Thanks to China's cooperation, the revival of the crested ibis in Japan has become a reality. From now on Japan must work to restore the environment so that ibises can once again be seen flying in the wild.
