For the ordinary viewer, commercials tend to be seen as a nuisance. It is true that when a tense sports match or a moving drama gets interrupted by ads, it is only natural to feel that way. Almost every broadcaster, however, is run on advertising revenue. It is therefore no exaggeration to say that the real purpose of broadcasting is to get people to watch the commercials, not the programs themselves.
2
That said, as long as viewers turn on the television for the programs and not for corporate advertising, the interests of the sponsoring companies and the broadcasters will always be at odds with those of the audience. In other words, the side that shows the commercials has to use every trick it can to somehow keep reluctant viewers from changing the channel.
3
For example, a product name or a company name is easier to remember when it is set to music than when it is simply spoken. Hence the commercial jingle. A product also feels more approachable when someone familiar introduces it rather than a stranger. Hence the casting of popular entertainers in commercials. In fact, it is not even unusual for world-class stars and singers to appear in them. Conversely, quite a few actors have become famous through commercials, and quite a few songs have become hits because they were used in one. Since the ads run many times a day, we end up memorizing the faces and the melodies without realizing it.
4
Commercial contests are held frequently in Japan. Many of the award-winning entries build a superb drama within a mere fifteen or thirty seconds, or stand out for the quality of their visual expression. There are also more and more commercials that introduce a company's social contributions or send a social message about issues such as the environment. Rather than pitching a product directly, these may be called commercials made to convey the corporate image itself.
