There are all kinds of specialty restaurants depending on the type of food: ramen, hamburgers, steak, pasta and so on, truly a wide variety. Restaurants specializing in Japanese food are numerous as well. Udon, soba, tempura, sushi, sukiyaki and the like are just as varied.

In Japan, when you go to a restaurant and take your seat, you are usually given an oshibori, a damp hand towel. Tea or cold water is also served free of charge before you order. After that, you look at the menu and order your food.

Some Japanese dishes have interesting names. For example, oyakodon is a dish of chicken and egg cooked together and served over rice. The name comes from the fact that chicken and egg are parent and child. There is also a dish called taninadon, made by cooking pork or beef with egg and serving it over rice, because pork and egg are not parent and child but strangers.

Then what sort of dish is kitsune udon? It is certainly not udon with fox meat in it. It is udon topped with aburaage, a deep-fried tofu. The name is said to come either from the fact that the color of the fried tofu resembles that of a fox, or from the belief that fried tofu is a fox's favorite food.
