In Japan, Western food is eaten with a knife, fork and spoon, while Japanese food is eaten with chopsticks. In China and Korea, soup is eaten with a spoon or a Chinese soup spoon, but Japanese miso soup is drunk by lifting the bowl and putting it directly to the mouth. For the ingredients in it, of course, chopsticks are used.

Even though they are all called chopsticks, their shape and material differ from country to country and region to region. Chinese chopsticks are long, with a rounded tip and a thickness that hardly changes along their length. Besides wood, bamboo and plastic, some are made of jade or metal. Korean chopsticks are a little shorter than Chinese ones and somewhat flat in shape; metal ones, such as stainless steel, are the norm. Japanese chopsticks are shorter still than Korean ones, growing thinner toward the end and tapering to a point. They are most often made of wood or bamboo, and are sometimes coated with lacquer.

In Japanese homes, each person uses their own chopsticks and rice bowl. Meals are usually served divided onto individual plates and bowls, but when taking food from a large shared platter, using serving chopsticks is considered the proper etiquette.
