When Japanese people greet one another, they normally bow. In China it is usual to shake hands when greeting someone, but for Japanese people bowing is more common than shaking hands. When you bow, you tilt your upper body forward from the waist. Bows come in a wide range of angles, from a light one in which you merely tip your head to a deep one in which you lower your head considerably. Usually, when meeting someone for the first time, you lower your head deeply and make a polite bow.

When you meet someone for the first time on business, you present your business card. There are rules for how to hand a card over and how to receive one. When the other person is your senior, you first offer your own card and make a deep bow, and then receive the other person's card while bowing. Both when handing a card over and when receiving one, using both hands is more polite. You also have to be careful about what you talk about. When meeting for the first time, it is normal not to ask about personal matters. Especially with someone you meet in a business setting, it is best to avoid personal questions. People do not usually ask whether you are married, how much you earn, or how old you are.
