Okubo: Yes. In fact, forests and the sea are closely connected. When rain falls on a forest, the nutrients in the fallen leaves piled on the ground dissolve out and soak into the soil. That then flows down the rivers to the sea as nutrient-rich water, and it nourishes the small creatures and seaweed that fish feed on. That is why forests matter so much to fishermen.

Hata Shobei, the constable ordered to escort him and to board the boat with him, had heard only that Kisuke was a criminal who had killed his younger brother. Yet as he watched this thin, pale-faced Kisuke on the way from the prison compound to the pier, the man seemed remarkably meek and remarkably quiet, showing respect for him as an official of the shogunate and taking care not to go against him in anything. What is more, this was not the attitude one often sees among criminals, who feign docility in order to curry favor with authority.
