Text:

Japan has heavy rainfall, and it has long been thought of as a country blessed with water resources. Even today, many people assume that water will come out endlessly as soon as they turn the tap. Because the Japanese have lived in such an environment, their language has many idioms that take an abundance of water for granted, such as one meaning to spend lavishly and another meaning to let bygones be bygones.

Would you be surprised to hear that this water-rich country imports more than 40 billion tons of water a year from abroad? The reason is that water is used to produce everything around us, from food to paper and clothing. It is said, for example, that making one glass of milk takes 200 liters of water, and making a single T-shirt takes as much as 2,700 liters. For the milk, most of that water goes into growing the grass the cows eat; for the T-shirt, into growing the cotton it is made from. If you look around you again with this in mind, you will see just how much water our daily life depends on.

Of all industries, the one that needs the most water is agriculture. All of the 40 billion tons of water mentioned earlier is used to produce food. Japan's food self-sufficiency rate is low, at around 40 percent, and the reality is that Japanese tables are supported by imports from abroad. The water used overseas to produce the food Japan imports adds up to more than 40 billion tons. Of course Japan is not importing the water itself, but through its food imports it is indirectly importing the water that went into producing that food.

Suppose you order one hamburger and one cup of coffee at a restaurant. Making that hamburger takes 1,240 liters of water for the 80 grams of beef and 60 liters for the 45 grams of bread, 1,300 liters in all. One cup of coffee takes 140 liters, so a single meal indirectly consumes 1,440 liters of water, the equivalent of 720 two-liter plastic bottles.

The world's population is projected to reach 8 billion by 2025. Securing enough food to feed a still-growing population is a major challenge, and water resources are indispensable to producing that food. In the century from 1900 to 2000, the world's population tripled, but water use increased sixfold. Population growth, industrialization, and rising material standards of living keep pushing global demand for water higher. According to United Nations projections, water consumption by 2020 will be 1.4 times what it was in 2009. This is why the water crisis is said to be directly linked to a worldwide food crisis.

The earth is called the water planet, but once seawater and the ice of the Arctic, the Antarctic, and glaciers are excluded, the fresh water we can readily use in daily life is said to be only about 0.01 percent of all the water on the planet. If a growing humanity is to secure its food, protecting water resources is an urgent task.

At the same time, however, groundwater and water sources around the world are being polluted. The main causes are household wastewater and industrial wastewater. When dirty water is poured straight into a river, an enormous amount of water is needed to dilute it until fish can live in it again. Pour one tablespoon of used cooking oil into a river, for example, and it takes 5,040 liters, the equivalent of 2,520 two-liter plastic bottles, to dilute it to water fish can live in. Building septic tanks and sewage treatment plants matters, of course, but the burden on water resources can also be greatly reduced if each of us pays attention to the wastewater from washing dishes and doing laundry.
8
Polluted water is, as a resource, the same as water that does not exist. Unlike fossil fuels such as coal and oil, however, water is a circulating resource that can be used sustainably if it is used wisely. Saving water goes without saying, but we must not forget that caring about what we send down the drain, and not leaving food uneaten or throwing food away, also lead to protecting the world's water.
