Xiuli: Huh. A dog.

Midori: So I figured it would be two or three days and told her sure, but then, well...

Midori: When she brought the dog over, she said she wanted me to keep it for a month! I was stunned.

Midori: But I had assumed she would bring dog food and such along, and all that showed up was the dog, which surprised me all over again.

Xiuli: By Japanese standards it may well feel that way. But for Chinese people, it goes without saying that friends help each other out all the way.

Midori: Right. Xiuli, you told me about that a long time ago.

Xiuli: For me it was the opposite. I used to worry about why my Japanese friends never relied on me. It felt lonely.

It has been two months since I was posted to Beijing. I have gotten fairly used to the work. Everyone at the branch treats me well, and I am spending very fulfilling days here.

The other day, after work, a colleague named Zhang invited me and some other coworkers out for a meal. He is young, but he is good at his job, and I rely on him in all sorts of ways. He took us to a Zhejiang restaurant he goes to often. We ordered beer and Shaoxing wine as well, and I feel like we ate and drank quite a lot.

We wrapped up after about two hours, but when the bill came, I meant to pay at least my own share, so I asked how much it was. Zhang, however, would not hear of it and said that he was paying. He is younger than I am, and other colleagues were there too, so I suggested that we split the bill, at which point Zhang said, 'I was the one who invited you, so I am the one who pays.' From Zhang's point of view, that would surely have meant losing face. Since I could hardly embarrass him, I felt somewhat apologetic but had no choice except to let him treat me.

But this is taken for granted in China, and it seems it is not limited to Zhang. That means that if I casually invited people out every day the way I would in Japan, it would turn into quite a burden. In any case, next time I want to be the one to invite Zhang and the others and return the favor.

The other day I had business negotiations in Dalian, and I went on the trip together with a Chinese colleague. It was my first negotiation since coming to China. Dalian is quite a nice place. It is quiet and calm, and somehow I felt a European atmosphere there. It is a place I would recommend to all of you.

This happened during negotiations with a client. It was my first time meeting the person from the client company, who was fairly advanced in years and struck me as a real go-getter. When the negotiations were over and we were chatting, he began asking me all kinds of things about myself. My date of birth, where I was from, my university, my parents and siblings, of course, and then one question after another about where I lived and whether I owned a car, right down to things I would consider personal information. Since this rarely happens in Japan, I felt a bit uncomfortable. So I avoided answering clearly and gave vague replies to put him off. After that, he suddenly turned cold and distant.

Later I asked a colleague whether I really had to give a serious answer to every single question about personal privacy, and I was told that in China, too, people tend not to ask about private matters, especially with someone they are meeting for the first time, but that some people do ask on occasion, and that this sort of thing is not considered particularly rude. Because the other person is trying to get to know you better, it is if anything a sign of goodwill.

Whether Japanese or Chinese, most people do not much enjoy being grilled about their private lives. Still, I have come to understand that it is an expression of goodwill, of wanting to know the other person, so I would like to accept that feeling.
