There are various styles of wedding ceremony in Japan. Among them, the Shinto ceremony held at a shrine, the Christian ceremony held at a church, and the civil ceremony held before relatives and friends are probably the most common.

Holding a Christian-style wedding does not necessarily mean that the couple are Christians. Many people choose the style of their ceremony according to their own preferences, such as wanting to wear a wedding dress or wanting to hold the ceremony in a church, and only a few decide on the basis of religion. Since hotels and wedding halls have their own ceremony spaces, few people actually go to a shrine or a church. What is more, a growing number of people hold their ceremonies overseas.

The graph below summarizes the results of a survey that a certain publisher conducted among 400 married couples in the Tokyo metropolitan area. It shows that the style of wedding ceremonies has been changing with the times. In 1994, Christian-style weddings accounted for 56.6 percent and civil ceremonies for 5.4 percent, whereas by 2005 these had risen to 74.7 percent and 12.6 percent respectively. Shinto weddings, the traditional style, meanwhile fell in 2005 to one third of the 1994 figure. In this way, people's attitudes toward weddings have been changing along with the times.
