I worked for a manufacturer and reached retirement age two years ago. But I stayed on at the company and am still working today. In 2006 my company introduced a system under which employees who reach retirement age can keep working until they are 65, though at a reduced salary. It is the so-called re-employment system, and the contract is renewed every year. This is my second year making use of it. When I retired I was manager of product control; now I work on a part-time contract, training new employees. Although I have stepped back from the front line, I can put the experience I have built up to full use, and I find the work truly rewarding. Simply having a workplace where I can still work alongside young staff and pass on my own experience makes me happier than anything.

In my working days the responsibility of being a middle manager weighed heavily on my shoulders, and working overtime every day was taken for granted. Now I have plenty of room to breathe, in my mind and in my schedule alike. Looked at in a certain way, you might even say my days are fuller now than when I was on the front line. Still, I plan to end the re-employment after one more year. I am beginning to think it might be nice to spend my days doing nothing but reading.

Last year my love of soba got the better of me and I opened a handmade soba shop. It is a tiny place converted from my humble home in a residential district, so small that five customers fill every seat. On average two or three customers come each day. There are days when the shop is open but no one comes at all, though that is only to be expected when word of mouth is my sole advertising. Even so, I am content, as long as there is someone, even just one person, who comes to eat the soba I have made.

I run the shop entirely on my own. My wife's hobby is pottery, which she has kept up for more than twenty years, and every vessel used in the shop is her work. Some customers take to the vessels more than to the soba and ask who made them. Honestly, that stings a little, but answering that they are my wife's work does not feel altogether bad. The only trouble is that my wife then puts in a request of her own: make soba worthy of the vessels.

I used to be a local government official, and from soon after I started work my lunch was always at a soba shop near the office. On days off I would go around eating at four or five shops in a single day. Then one day I was captivated by the soba I came across in Azumino, Nagano Prefecture, and, ignoring my wife's advice to keep it to eating out, I went so far as to live in at a shop and train there. My soba shop began as a hobby that got out of hand, but every day I keep honing my skill so the soba lives up to the vessels.

I get up at four in the morning. I wash my face, change into work clothes and head out to the field. Before dawn there is not a soul there; the air is clear and refreshing. At the moment I am hard at work growing tomatoes and cucumbers to ship to the market. The harvest is not large. My husband and I live on our own, so we ship everything except what we eat ourselves. The weather can have its say, but vegetables reward you properly if you tend them carefully, so cutting corners is out of the question. When I see the tomatoes glistening with freshness in the morning sun, I am filled with a sense of fulfillment beyond words. Three years ago we moved here from Tokyo, rented a field and began growing vegetables. Touching the soil is very good for your health. It is as though the earth were giving me its energy. The early rising, let alone the effort that growing vegetables takes, is no burden at all. I wake up naturally in the morning, and breakfast tastes good. My husband used to skip breakfast often, but he says that is unthinkable now. Rice with miso soup, pickles and natto, plus freshly picked tomatoes and cucumbers. After a proper amount of work, a meal needs only a few side dishes.

Now I live each day letting nature take its course and fitting myself to my surroundings. I cannot help feeling that this is how human beings were meant to live. It was my newly retired husband who suggested the move, and I came along only reluctantly, but these days I have grown thoroughly fond of this life.
