Club activities are extracurricular activities carried out after school. Regardless of ability, students choose a club that suits their own personality and interests, and the students who join each club run its activities on their own initiative.

Whether or not students join a club, however, varies with each school's educational policy and school culture. Thus, while some schools that proclaim excellence in both study and sport are very active in club activities, other schools that make room for a more varied school life, such as evening high schools, are not so active. Still, most schools encourage club activities in the belief that students learn to cooperate with their peers and to curb their own selfishness, and grow in both mind and body. For this reason, many students join a club and make the most of school life, spending Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, and Friday at the club and Thursday and Saturday at cram school.

The most famous of all high school club activities is the national high school baseball tournament held every spring and summer. The official names differ, the spring event being the National High School Baseball Invitational Tournament and the summer event the National High School Baseball Championship, but because both are played at Hanshin Koshien Stadium in Hyogo Prefecture, they are commonly called Koshien. Every game is broadcast on television and radio, and you could say there is no one in Japan who does not know about them.

Among high school baseball events, the summer Koshien draws the most attention. Both the regional qualifiers and the national tournament are single-elimination, so not even one loss is allowed. Every young player takes on the challenge staking everything he has: the skills and mental strength built up through hard practice, and his luck as well.

Playing at Koshien is the dream of every high school baseball player, and of the people of his home region as well. Some charter a bus and organize a Koshien viewing tour to go and cheer, and once their alma mater has qualified, many who do not go in person still lend support through donations and the like. It is no exaggeration to say that the whole country entrusts its own dreams to the unscripted drama these young players create and follows their every move.

The word Koshien is also used as an alternative name for the national tournaments of other clubs. The national band competition, for example, is held at a hall called Fumonkan in Suginami Ward, Tokyo, and this hall is known as the Koshien of band music. Deliberately using the word Koshien calls to mind the image of young people striving with all their passion. The competition itself is sometimes simply called Fumonkan, and this way of speaking too can be said to derive from Koshien. There are various other national events of the kind, such as the Koshien of calligraphy and the Koshien of comics.

Among sports other than high school baseball, the major national event that ranks alongside Koshien is the Inter-High School Championships, formally the National High School Athletic Meet. The conditions for taking part differ from event to event, but competitors must win their way in turn through the prefectural meet and the regional qualifiers, finishing above a set standard each time. The program runs to more than thirty events, including track and field, gymnastics, rugby, swimming, and skiing.

Only a handful of people carry on after graduation with the sport they threw themselves into in junior high and high school and go on to succeed as professionals or amateurs. Even so, through club activities students can make friends for life, and in job hunting they can confidently point to the mental strength they built up in a demanding group environment. Clubs, one may say, have become an irreplaceable place in Japanese school life for children to develop both physical and mental strength.
