Every year, from around the time the new school term begins, students in recruit suits start to appear on the streets. A recruit suit is the outfit worn when visiting a company one hopes to join; for men and women alike, it means a plain suit in black, dark navy, or gray.

Even though the employment ice age is said to be over, that does not mean one can easily get a job at the company one wants. The fields popular with young people in Japan are banks, publishers, automakers and the like, but only a very small number manage to join the company they hope for.

Job hunting starts with choosing the companies one would like to join. Students look at company websites or visit the companies in person, and then apply for their hiring examinations. These days it is also possible to apply from a computer.

Applicants have to sit many tests: a first round, a second round, a third round. Interviews, too, are often held not just once but two or three times. Only after getting through all of these tests does one receive an informal offer. Students begin preparing for their job hunt as early as they possibly can, working hard so that they can join the company they want.
