Fukuyama: The inside of the container is covered with sponge-like projections so fine that you can't make them out with the naked eye.

Takashima: (touching the inside) Ah, it does feel rough. So this is it.

Fukuyama: That's right. Those projections absorb the moisture from the ice and seal the cold air inside. That is the hygroscopic property. And if you put the lid on and seal it, the temperature inside is kept constant. In other words, heat retention.

Yamada: I see. So it's a material that combines moisture absorption and heat retention.

Fukuyama: Yes. That's why, even if you leave ice sitting in it, no water is left behind.

Fukuyama: Let me see... With a one-liter container, for example, a single piece of ice keeps it cold for about eight hours.

Fukuyama: No. If you chill the whole container in the refrigerator with the lid off and then put the lid on when you take it out, the cold air is sealed in, so you get much the same effect.

Yamada: Also, since it retains heat, warm things naturally stay warm, right?

Fukuyama: Of course. Say you put takoyaki in it. Even then, it absorbs the heat and keeps it warm, so no moisture forms.
